Introduction of the project

Basic information

One of the EU's major tasks is to conserve nature and to protect rare and endangered species. With the network of habitats of rare and endangered plant and animal species of European concern, all EU members have committed themselves to their conservation. Article 6 of the Habitat Directive, which apart from Bird Directive presents a legal basis for Natura 2000, clearly obligates all member state to do everything necessary for a favourable conservation status of species, even by making management plans for these areas, if necessary.

The project »Natura 2000 in Slovenia – management models and information system«, whose applicant was the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation, iwas dedicated to a systematic solving of the questions associated with effective and sustainable management of Natura 2000 areas. Within the project's framework, five pilot Nature areas had been selected, where various activities were being carried out in order to solve various concrete nature-conservancy issues. The project was being carried out with the support of EU, i.e. the LIFE III – Natura financial programme, and co-financed by the national Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning.

Support and participation regarding the project's implementation had also been confirmed by the following partners:  Ministero dell’ Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio, Slovene Forest Service, Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia, Water Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, Notranjski Museum Postojna, Šentjur pri Celju Council, and Kapele Local Community.
